Well, okay, it's just the side view of the model used for CGI reference, but I think it should be pretty accurate as far as canonicity goes. What do you think? Do you think that it's accurate in its depiction of Taweret? Let us know your thoughts about that statue in the comments section below.
NOTE: The quality of the image on the right is a result of its being scanned. For a more high quality version of the image, pick up a copy of the latest issue of Lost: The Official Magazine, in stores now.
Oh look!! its sam mc pherson!!! Wow I aint seen you since the rewatch!! Remember that . . . . $%&*
ReplyDeleteCool pic - The statue is still such a big mystery - I can't wait to find out more about it
ReplyDeleteAnd I have to agree with the first post as far as abandoning the rewatch goes - what's going on with that?
I gotta agree as well. You've dropped the Rewatch ball Sam.
ReplyDeleteI would be more than willing to help you write the insurmountable 400 words a week if necessary....
Hey, I'd be glad to write some rewatch text, too. I've been conducting my own rewatch and find it very interesting.
ReplyDeleteHowever, for those jumping down Sam's back, just remember we have five months before the final season. If three or four episodes are reviewed each week, we'll be fine.
The face (especially the eye) look crap. From the glimpses we've been getting on the show, everytime I see the statue I get chills (four toes! the sheer SIZE!), and so I was expecting a pretty scary face, at least some SNARL. I mean, come on, the builders, worshippers of this God, would have given it a little more credit, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteBut still a good find...
it looks masculine and with more teeth than traditional depictions of tawaret (found on google), but that's definitely a hippo.
ReplyDeletemaybe there's going to be some significance as to the gender change.
Definitely a hippo? Seriously? Have you seen a hippo?
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippopotamus
Based on the traditional representation of Taweret, this is way off. Taweret is always pictured pregnant, and is always a female. It also has the head of a lion or a hippo, which this statue clearly does not.
In addition to my previous post, here is some evidence to support my belief that the statue is NOT Taweret. I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and took pictures of every statue of Taweret I could find. Here are the pictures, please tell me which one looks anything like the statue.

Jimmy that's really cool.
ReplyDeleteI think the magazine acknowledges it as Taweret too, though I think it looks like Sobek too.
Why everyone keeps talking about taweret??? I mean it is way to different to keep nagging with that!!! its not female, it has pointy teeth... c'mon!!! besides like someone previously said it doesnt look like a hipo and it aint pregnant and has no breasts!!!...
ReplyDeleteIm still ruling for Sobek!

He is a guy, has the cross, the teeth, and the ears... thats a crocodile head! Ive been saying it for long!... People connected with the pregnancy thing which i always felt like it was related with the time skipping... and thats Dharma time... so when the statue was there there were no pregnancy issues...
another pic...

Its quite the same!! I had my doubts when we were only shownt the back and not the front but now its like obvious!.
from wikipedia: The god Sobek, which was depicted as a crocodile or a man with the head of a crocodile was a powerful and frightening deity; in some Egyptian creation myths, it was Sobek who first came out of the waters of chaos to create the world. As a creator god, he was occasionally linked with the sun god Ra. Gradually, Sobek also came to symbolize the produce of the Nile and the fertility that it brought to the land; its status thus became more ambiguous
Now read the next thing and tell me if it doesnt sound jacob-like...
Sobek's ambiguous nature led some Egyptians to believe that he was a repairer of evil that had been done, rather than a force for good in itself, for example, going to Duat to restore damage done to the dead as a result of their form of death. He was also said to call on suitable gods and goddesses required for protecting people in situation, effectively having a more distant role, nudging things along, rather than taking an active part. In this way, he was seen as a more primal god, eventually becoming regarded as an avatar of the primal god Amun, who at that time was considered the chief god. When his identity finally merged, Amun had become merged himself with Ra to become Amun-Ra, so Sobek, as an avatar of Amun-Ra, was known as Sobek-Ra.
He was shown with an ankh, representing his ability to undo evil and so cure ills. (Now this sounds like LOST alright!!!)
Now Im convinced people... thats sobek!
I have a degree in Ancient Egyptian Language/Culture, and with that background my first thought when I saw the episode was that it was Sobek (pointy teeth, no breasts/belly).
ReplyDeleteBut, if they're calling it Taweret then that's what they intended, and the art department just didn't get it quite right. I don't think it's reasonable to expect that there will be a big twist and it will actually be Sobek. So, there's no point in debating whether it is Sobek or Taweret. It's just a poor representation of Taweret.
Has there ever been an official statement from Damon, Carlton, or ABC that it is definitely Tawaret? Because I am falling on the side of those feeling it is Sobek.
ReplyDeleteHmm I am still thinking that it is Taweret, even though it doesn't look dead on. Seems that maybe the Lost folks have indeed verified this at least once..
ReplyDeleteThis is from Wikipedia..
A giant, four-toed statue, identified by the official recap of the series as Taweret[5], stands on the beach of the mysterious island on the American TV series Lost, a fact alluded to beforehand by the solution to a Lost-themed Wired Magazine cryptographic puzzle by Bruce Schneier.
Yeah it's been confirmed as Taweret a number of times. See under trivia at:
ReplyDeletehttp://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Taweret
I know that many people have said that it's Taweret, in at least somewhat official capacities. I think that if that's what they intended, they either messed up, or made it different for some reason. We'll find out which one eventually, I guess.
ReplyDeletein lostpedia they said that there might have been 2 statues... the one with the black rock coming has its legs together meanwhile the one that sawyer saw in the time jumps had its legs separated... look up both pics... so maybe we are looking at symbols of who ruled the island win different times... maybe one statue is tawaret connected with jacob and the other is sobek conected with nemesis (read all this in lospedia)
ReplyDeleteAlso I took a look at the trapestry of jacob and it shows like an antic theory of men on earth... the sun helping the men, the faraon, the people... harvesting, taking care of the land and finally taking the ships and conquering other lands... has anyone thought about that?...
If it's officially been called Tawaret, then that's what the show calls it--and that subsequently means *nothing* in terms of what it really is. Don't go jumping to conclusions about who the statue could or couldn't depict. We have zero information on the statue's purpose or origin; it could be a Tawaret of a different time, or it could be Sobek, or it could be a statue of Mikhail in a rockin' Halloween costume (I think I'll put my money on that one).
ReplyDeleteWe have a full picture of it from an official source, which is awesome! We will definitely get an answer in the coming season; until then, open your mind to more possibilities than it being solidly one deity or another. Also remember that depiction, role and name of Egyptian deities changed VERY frequently in their history.
It could be a fusion of both deities. It could be a deity created by earlier inhabitants of the island whose image was inspired by any number of Egyptian deities. It could be none of these things and something completely unrelated to Egypt at all.
My money's still on Halloween Mikhail. Or maybe it's the old team mascot of the Dharma football team.
I'll accept it as Taweret only after I hear Damon or Carlton say so. And even then I'll think the art department should be fired. That is simply not a pregnant hippopotamus.
ReplyDeleteHaha, Idledandy- I agree.
