From what I had heard from Comic Con visitors, I believed only fun and jokey videos were aired at the show this year. This was a little disappointing, as there was such a precedent for shocking videos that I thought this year would be no different, especially with it being the final panel for LOST.
However, DocArzt's crew tipped me off to the fact that not only were some videos jokey, but they also had some astonishing aspects to them. Below is the video. Now as I said in my previous post, I don't do spoilers but I don't consider this necessarily a spoiler - as with the Chang videos of previous years I consider it to be ARG-like revelation content. That said, the repurcussions of this video are huger I think than any previous Con video, so in that sense, you could be major league spoiled. Here's the video anyway, and I'll post additional comments underneath in white font so you have to highlight it to read the interpretation. That should suffice, if you don't want to know, don't watch the video and don't highlight the text. Also avoid the comments section, as there might be direct discussion points from readers. You have been warned!
So what can we gleam from these videos? Well it's pretty obvious - it seems to suggest that they have in fact re-written the timeline. Remember how Chang's video last year told us all "they go back in time". Well this year's one says "they actually did it". Hurley's bad luck with the lottery seems very interesting - why would the numbers no longer be cursed, because the Island doesn't exist anymore? And the Oceanic advert - "Since 1979... 30 years with a perfect safety record..." - so no crash on September 22nd then! How will the storyline develop if none of the last five seasons ever happened (bar flashbacks)?! Will destiny rewrite things? Will there be other timelines with Sun and people? Does that make Jacob still alive? Charlie? Shannon? Michael... everyone!
Update - Another video promo is also available, focusing on another character:
Apparently you CAN make a difference!
I may be reading too much into this, but looking at the customers in Hurley's restaurant, there's an African American father and son which reminded me of Michael and Walt, and a bald headed man, who reminded me of Locke. No idea if that was on purpose, just found it interesting.
ReplyDeleteOh my god dude, THIS IS INSANE!!!!!! I was kind of thinking that while watching the videos, but once i read what you said it dead locked into my head...jesus man, this is big, THIS IS BIG! And the best part is, you know this is a for sure spoiler, these two videos give 400% the amount of evidence needed to do so. The first one makes you realize, the second one locks the whole situation in. Jack did it, he changed the future...
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, you have NO idea if this is canon. There is NO CANON evidence for a reset and tons in the canon show contradicting it.
ReplyDeleteCorvus - I think the fact these were presented by the writers demonstrate their canon. Lindelof comments after the Kate video "interesting... I thought Kate's step father died in the fire..."
ReplyDeleteIf you look at last year's video: showing Chang having a knowledge of 2008... it directly implicated that the characters would travel in time. I doubt that things like Wayne will be directly dealt with on the show in Season 6, as how Faraday was never shown making a video with Chang from last year's Con... but the principle and essence of what they are saying is there - time has been rewritten.
Aw, now I want to go to Comic Con like rewind time and go watch that. It'd be only a 2 hour drive for me...
ReplyDeleteBut that is amazing, I wonder what happened to her father. Jacob probably saved him after she put him to bed.
these really aren't necessarily spoilers. they could simply be flashes into a POSSIBLE season six reality. one which may not be the true outcome of the incident.
ReplyDeleteThat bald man reminds me not of Locke, but of Dave.
ReplyDeleteWell, the implication of the Hurley and Kate videos is pretty clear: the hydrogen bomb blew up the island and somehow changed the future slightly. Yes, Hurley still won the lottery and bought Mr. Cluck's, but now he's experiencing good luck, even to the point of going to Australia safely. Oceanic Airline still exists, but now it has a perfect record. And Kate still tries to kill her father and she's still running, but this time it's not successful.
ReplyDeleteI would imagine this could be the writers screwing with us. I highly doubt that the bomb was so successful that the island was essentially destroyed and all the 815 passengers just go about their business. After all, that would make Season 6 really boring. We would simply be shown the new realities of each character's life.
I think the line that Hurley says about chicken heaven is proof that they're screwing with us. Haven't they revealed to us that the characters are not dead or dreaming?
It might be that the the future changes but the characters still come to the island or interact with each other and Jacob. Wouldn't it be interesting Hurley wasn't cursed by the numbers and if Kate never killed her father... if Jack never ratted on his father or got divorced... if Sawyer never conned anyone... and still they had to the island to save Jacob? Who knows? I don't trust anything other than the show. The writers have been known to make jokes and it would make no sense to go this far into the show and reveal so much right now. So, I'm guessing they are having their fun with us.
I have a theory that this season flashbacks/forwards will be replaced by jumps between two different realities. One reality where the bomb went off and changed time, and one where the bomb didn't go off.
ReplyDeleteIf this happens, id be willing to bet that the reality where the bomb didn't go off would have the show end with them leaving the island, and the reality where the bomb went off would have them end up on the island because its there destiny
I'd have to agree that these videos are a type of spoiler. I don't think that they are as literal as last year's Chang video, which foretold that the Losties would travel through time, though.
ReplyDeleteMy bet is that, instead of Flashbacks (all of the character's backstories are essentially finished) or Flashforwards (which there is no need for), we'll have Flashsideways (views of what the Losties lives would have been if Jack had been successful).
I love James' comment- I hadn't thought of that! That would fit in with what they said about being done with flash backs and forwards but being similar. Ohh I hope that's what happens now!!
ReplyDeleteI think that somehow they'll use those moments in early flashbacks when one character cross another before they know themselves from the crash. But of course those could just be the show trying to imply destiny. Mistaking fate for coincidence, maybe?
ReplyDeleteUmm.... Did I hear that wrong or did Dameon say that Smokey hasn't shown up as anyone besides Locke? What about Christian? And Alex? Am I getting this wrong?
ReplyDelete@James...
ReplyDeleteyou know what, you may be right, cos i remember Matthew Fox did say something about the timelines in an interview...he said that at the start of the season, there'd be two timelines which, after halfway thru the series would merge into one definite timeline
I agree with some others that instead of flashbacks and flashforwards we're going to get flashsideways. Alternate realities will emerge until the one "perfect reality" ultimately wins. Maybe Jack and John will be instrumental in restoring order in some way.
ReplyDeleteThese new comic-con videos are misdirection. They are out-of-context clues. Imagine if all we had seen before the flash-forward season was the Oceanic Six press conference, without knowing that they had all agreed to lie. Hearing that conference out of context would have made us believe everything we'd seen in the show had been changed/reset - no one else survived the crash, Aaron was Kate's baby and not Claire's, etc. But of course that was all a lie.
ReplyDeleteJust because Hurley says in a commercial that he's had nothing but good luck since winning the lottery doesn't mean he's telling the truth. Since when do commercials (or the news) tell the whole truth? (Or Damon and Carlton for that matter?)
This last season will be about making everything whole.
ReplyDeleteSomething, perhaps the explosion at the end of season five, has caused a break in the universe that has expanded into the past and the future. This has created multiple realities (the recent comic-con vids are examples of one of them) but none of them are 'correct'. The explosion wasn't 'supposed' to happen, so when it did it created the flaw, or break, in the universe.
By the end of the show, a reality will have been chosen and all of time and history will finally be as it was destined to be.
JEFF AND JENN: I think you're mistaken--I'm pretty sure I know the question/answer you're talking about, and I believe the person asked if JACOB had shown up as anything else in the previous seasons, other than the form we see him in in The Incident.
ReplyDeleteSmokey is NOT Jacob, furthermore, D&L have previously stated (if I remember correctly) that the medusa spiders that nix Paulo and Nikki, and Yemi are "manifestations" of the monster, so to speak.
OH! Right. Thanks, Casey! I feel so much better.
ReplyDeleteAlso the more I think about the flash-sideways concept the more convinced I am that that's what's going to happen. Which I think will be really cool.
Maybe we'll go through the whole season not knowing which one is the real reality until the end.
ReplyDeleteYou know, what I don't understand is how they're going to wrap up the show all in one season! If they change history and still end up on the island, there's a lot of story needed to get them there. That's why I like Doc Jensen's theory that even though time is reset, the main characters remember what happened before due to Jacob's touch...
ReplyDeleteAnyone else curious about the Russian subtitles in the America's Most Wanted video? Is the video being watched in Russia? We've seen Ilana and Jacob there....
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - I think the Russian subs have just been added by the YouTube video uploader for Russian LOST fans.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone notice the eye in the Oceanic Airlines logo at the end of the Hurley video? Is that new? Of course, it reminds me of the eye theme, how the show began with a shot of Jack's eye and several episodes have opened on other characters' eyes. It also reminds me of the Eye of Horus, seen at the top of Jacob's tapestry.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so that Oceanic logo isn't new - it's just the first time I noticed it. And doesn't the eye look sort of like an island from a bird's eye view? Interesting how all of that ties together.
ReplyDeleteany ideas why the meal cost $4.42? that's a strange price for a fast food meal.
ReplyDeleteThose are two of the numbers: 4 and 42. So, the numbers aren't dead yet.
ReplyDelete4 and 42 are the first and last numbers. Might be reading too much into it, but it could mean coming full circle... first and last.
ReplyDelete4.42
ReplyDelete42 is the answer. c'mon guys
Can anyone get a translation of the Russian anyway. I'm a neophyte at this sort of thing but very curious why ("Yacob") Jacob's name would come up (at 0.32). Google translate does not help with Kryllic!!!
ReplyDeleteAlright, maybe I'm really reading way to far into this, but at 19 seconds the cloud in the upper right looks like a hatchet.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you who don't get where I'm going yet, The Hatchet is a book by Gary Pualson (I think that's the name) about a boy that crashes in the Canadian Wilderness and has to find his way out. Interesting parallel.
What do folks think about the plane crash in the second video?
ReplyDeleteThat "second video" is a fake, the plane crash is a scene from Know1ng.
ReplyDeletecan i just say that i thought that everything that happened in season 5 confirmed that the past already happened with Daniel being sent to his death, the dharma employee photo , and some other events which i can't remember. the biggest confirmation for me is Dr.Chang with the fake hand talking about the incident.
