Food for Thought: The Final Main Cast

For the past four years, people have been speculating on the main cast lineup of the next season of Lost. Many draft picks have not made the cut several times in a row (fan favorite Richard Alpert has not been on the main cast yet), though quite a few have (Michael Emerson and Henry Ian Cusick joined the cast for season three onward). But by the end of this year, the speculation on who will be a member of the main cast will be over for good -- press releases will be out by December, if not earlier, and we'll find out who is in the final lineup. Here's my guess for the main cast of next year.

I think by now that we've ascertained that all our seventies friends survived the blast (simply because there are so many integral characters in that group). So that means that next year we'll (of course) have Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Daniel Dae Kim, and Ken Leung on the main cast once again. I don't think that Sayid (played by Naveen Andrews), despite the gutshot, is done quite yet either, so we'll add him to the queue as well. However, I think that Elizabeth Mitchell is done for, regardless of the reset or not. Not only is she starring in V next year, but she looked in pretty bad shape at the end of last year, and she detonated the Jughead. So I'm ruling her out.

The 2007ers are probably all safe too. Terry O'Quinn as Jacob's nemesis, Michael Emerson as Ben, and Yunjin Kim as Sun are all safe, undoubtedly. Henry Ian Cusick, who remains off-Island, was extremely underused last year, but it's safe to say he'll be back into the fray before long. We're not done with him.

So here's where we determine who's going to be on the main cast next year. I think it's high time we get Emilie de Ravin back on the cast, so she'll probably rejoin for the final season. Frank, with his candidacy, looks to be a pretty likely pick for next year's cast, as do Ilana and Bram, who are apparently going to be major players next year. Then there's Richard, who fans have been dying to find out about since his appearances in season three. I think there's little question that he'll be on the main cast.

There are a few other recurrings that I'll go over the chances for in the list below.

Matthew Fox as Jack Shephard -- Certain.
Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen -- Certain.
Josh Holloway
as James "Sawyer" Ford -- Certain
Jorge Garcia
as Hugo "Hurley" Reyes -- Certain
Michael Emerson as Benjamin Linus -- Certain
Daniel Dae Kim as Jin-Soo Kwon -- Certain
Yunjin Kim
as Sun-Hwa Kwon -- Certain
Ken Leung
as Miles Straume -- Certain
Terry O'Quinn
as Jacob's nemesis -- Certain
Henry Ian Cusick as Desmond Hume -- Certain
Naveen Andrews as Sayid Jarrah -- Likely
Nestor Carbonell
as Richard Alpert -- Likely
Zuleikha Robinson
as Ilana -- Likely
Brad William Henke as Bram -- Likely
Jeff Fahey
as Frank Lapidus -- Likely
Emilie de Ravin
as Claire Littleton -- Likely
Elizabeth Mitchell
as Juliet Burke -- Unlikely
L. Scott Caldwell
as Rose Nadler -- Unlikely
Sam Anderson
as Bernard Nadler -- Unlikely

Now, you may think that I'm being a little too liberal with the "certains" and "likelies" but even if everyone I listed as certain or likely was a member of the main cast next year, it still wouldn't be as large of a cast as the cast of season four was.

But now, it's your turn. Who do you think will be a main character next year?

  1. What about Jacob? And didn't they already say Claire would be main cast?

  2. I like your picks- I think you have nailed most of them pretty accurately.

I hope, however, that Sayid will not be "likely" and instead "certain" for the main cast. He has been such a major character for five seasons that it would be a complete shame to see him tapered off in the opening episodes of season 6. His story is so rich and his history (at least on the island) is so intertwined with the other characters. It will be interesting to see how the writers handle his wound in relation to the hydrogen bomb and the time laspe (if it occurs).

How much longer until season 6?

  3. What about Pierre Chang? He hurt his hand at the end of the season finale and its shown that he has a fake hand in some of the Dharma instructional videos. And those videos are post 1977, I do believe. I sincerely hope that we haven't seen the last of Juliet, we need to keep the Juliet-Sawyer-Kate-Jack "love square" going!!

  4. Aye they confirmed Emilie De Ravin WILL be back full-time << [full-time] on Lost as a series regular, they confirmed it way back just before Season 4 ended.

  5. WHAT ABOUT JOHN LOCKE!!!???

I refuse to stop seeing the bald-man in season 6. I know i know, he is dead, and now the others know he ain't the real locke.

But still...still... Come on...its john locke!

  6. and lets not forget our favorite neighbor, the man you love to hate, Mr Meade, sorry, oops, I mean Charles Widmore

  7. oh yeah, and i would also like to find out why walt was so special... there's got to be a reason why him and hurley have 'powers'... Both are similar to Miles.. and we know he was born on the island.

With the way lost changes each season, we can't rule out the return from ALL season 1 characters

  8. I'm gonna take a leap of faith here and hope that Charlie's guitar and the reemergence of Charlie's ring mean that they are bringing Charlie back.

    One can wish.

  9. Locke, Walt, Charlie, Claire, Desmond, Sayid, they all need to be back for the final season. They all have such important roles on the island. With Claire should also come her father, aka Jack's father.

The Dharma videos are dated 1980, not 77.

  10. i think this was said, but emilie de ravin has confirmed that she will be back for season 6 even though they told her she would not be in season 5.

  11. I'm afraid to think it, but I don't think Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond) will be returning. He is my favorite character with the best scenes on Lost (my opinion). I thought that they were going to kill him off last season as their big character death.

The reason I think he may not be a main cast member is, well...the name of his boat, "Our Mutual Friend".

  12. Juliet will be back - http://www.seattlepi.com/tvguide/406377_tvgif19.html

  13. During the NBA Finals, they ran a commercial with Dominic Monaghan playing foosball with stars from other ABC TV shows. One of his opponents says he's dead and he replies "I used to be." If that's not an indication that Charlie will be back (and alive), then I don't know what is. Could be the producers messing with us, but I hope not.

  14. Is this commercial on YouTube? I'd love to see it!

  17. I think Nestor Carbonell will finally be a Main Character, as with Francois Chau. Sayid I'm not so sure, and I think that Christian will again only appear as occasional visions. Charles and Eloise might get a bit more to do, but not main. Desmond's arc is nearly complete, so I think he'll be back. Also, despite the fact that Juliet was one of my favourite characters, I really hope she doesn't return. It didn't really work when Jin mysteriously resurfaced, and Juliet got vaporised. It's too much of a stretch. Here's hoping we get some more Lapidus and that the Adventures of Miles and Hurley continue...

  18. All the certain, I agree.
    Likely, Everybody but Bram
Unlikely, None will star, but they will all guest star at least once.
    Additions:
    Mark Pellegrino as Jacob
He will have an important role, even if he's dead.
    John Terry as Christian Shepherd
    Alan Dale as Charles Widmore
I read some online article that said that their contracts allow then to be full stars in Season 6.

  19. What about Christian Shepherd? He's been in every season.

  20. HELLO... I didn't See DESMOND on that list anywhere... I'd say in the CERTAIN category myself... most are suspecting we get a big dose of Desmond history in S6... also where would you list WALT?

  21. BRING CHARLIE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Christian Shepherd?
    He's been in every season.

  23. They could even bring back Charlotte and Faraday, I'm not saying they'd be regulars but they could be involved in S6. The idea of the reset allows anyone to come back and seeing as Charlotte's got an in depth history relating to the Island I'd hope we find out a little more about that history.

  24. The general majority (and it is a slight majority) seem to think everyone will be back in 2004 (the present) after the bomb exploded, and this seems the most practical in terms of story telling. This rules out Chang, I don't think he is deep enough a character to keep it going.
It would seem like Walt will be back, but I think he may be to grown up for them to fit him into the story.
I hope that Charlie and Juliet are dead and stay dead; I like their characters but if Locke can't come back, they can't. Juliet had to die, of that I'm certain, if my knowledge of nuclear weaponry is correct. My girlfriend keeps coming up with theories that Charlie is coming back; sorry ladies, he's not.

  25. I think Charlie will be back... my guess is that now that the body Jacob was "using" got killed, he'll "animate" another one and will pick Charlie's. So we'll have Charlie's actor back, but he'll be Jacob.

  26. I sincerely hope that they bring Desmond back for the final season! I can't imagine Lost without Desmond anymore! If he(Henry Ian Cusick) is going to leave the show, I hope he leaves in a heroic manner-- I mean, I he is my favorite character, but I don't want them to bring him back just to drag out his story. I think they ended his story in a weird way last year. I also think that it is time for Nestor Carbonell (Richard) to join the main cast. He has been a guest star for too long, and he is hanging out with "Anti-Locke" and that group in 2007, so I don't think there is any other alternative. Bringing Jacob on as a main character would reveal too much about him, so to keep some mystery about him, I think he will remain a guest star if even that. I would also love a reunion of the 815er's, but I doubt that that will happen.

  27. In regards to Patrick's post, I read on a blog or article years back that Walt and Jack did scenes that would be in the series finally to capture him (Walt) at that young age. That was around the time when it came out that Matthew Fox was the only one that knew how it would end.

  28. In the above comment I meant "finale" not "finally", sorry!

  29. Frank, Richard and Illana are main characters for sure and Claire will be back as a regular, I do not think that Bram is that important. I hope we will see Bernard and Rose again!
