Who is Simeon Hobbes?

Could it be? The start of a new ARG? It certainly seems so, and this one seems to be going back to the style of The Lost Experience.

Recently, a Twitter account for a Simeon Hobbes (from Tunis, Tunisia) was established, that posted snippets like, ""There is a time for many words, and there is also a time for sleep." Hear, O Jacob, and bless me in rest," and "We've all lost so much. Jacob, weave the right path."

When I first saw these Tweetings, I noticed the Lost references but could help but think that perhaps it was just a bored fan trying to stir up some excitement for this long break ahead. That was, until the YouTube channel for The Lost Experience posted a video entitled "Who is Simeon Hobbes?" The video was of a constellation, but the audio was morse code, which, when translated, read "
I AM THE BENNU BIRD, THE HEART-SOUL OF RA, THE GUIDE OF THE GODS TO THE TUAT." Hobbes then posted an instruction "Follow the Phoenix," which a user quickly determined referred to Twitter user Epithet Alpha, whose first Twitter post was the quote mentioned above. Simeon Hobbes later confirmed that Epthet Alpha was indeed who he was referring to, stating simply, "Phoenix found."

It's all very Egyptian, which relates to the statue of Taweret, as well as the Temple and all those hierogyphs. But what does it mean? What will we find out in preparation for next year? Who is Simeon Hobbes?

The one thing about Hobbes that we can tell you is that he shares his name with the philosopher Thomas Hobbes, who along with the real John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau is one of the guiding lights that Thomas Jefferson used when writing the Declaration of Independence.

It's exciting to see Twitter becoming the grounds for an all-new ARG, one which I might actually follow this time around.

As always, you can find Lostpedia on Twitter here. Simeon Hobbes' Twitter can be found here, and Epithet Alpha's Twitter can be found here.

We'll keep you posted with all the developments into this new ARG.

UPDATE 1: the YouTube account "thelostexperience" is not, as far as we are aware, official. This still leaves the authenticity of these Tweets up in the air. However, the channel has existed since March 2006.

  1. So it is real, or is a fake? Darlton said in the lates podcast, that at Comic-con they would begin something very interesting. This seems to early.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I think we are pretty sure it is real. Based on the fact that the You Tube "who is simeon hobbes" is on the Lost Experience You Tube channel.

    ReplyDelete
  3. It certainly appears to be real, considering the video on The Lost Experience's YouTube channel. I was skeptical until I saw that.

  4. Wife says, "Hobbes is an old name for the Devil." And Simeon was the name of one of Jacob's sons in the Bible.

  5. From "The Thames & Hudson Dictionary of Ancient Egypt":

benu birdIn Egyption religion, the sacred bird of Heliopolis. First mentioned in the Pyramid Texts in connection with Atum, it came to be regarded as the manifestation of RA and Osiris. In the New Kingdom it was frequently depicted in the Book of the Dead as a heron with a crest of two feathers. Closely linked with the Benben Stone, it was also the inspiration for the phoenix of Greek mythology.

  6. If the hints are all phoenix-y, are we getting the hint that Jacob or the Oceanic 6 are going to be brought back to life? Osiris's body parts were reassembled and he was resurrected. Sounds like a rebirth to me.

  7. hey has anyone thought about the weird numbers that the two guys post up on Twitter sometimes? epithetalpha just posted this:
    QW5kIFdpdGggVGhpcyBGaXJlIEkgUHVyaWZ5
The way the numbers are, it kind of looks like part of the URL to a Youtube video. Has anyone checked that out? It looks like SOME kind of URL at least.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I agree that it looks like a piece of a URL, but it's not a youtube video ID. Google returns nothing, I tried ABC.com and there's nothing. It looks like it's the ID of a post for a forum or something to me.

    ReplyDelete
  9. @jara shooud todd: I did check one that Simeon had earlier and it was the second part of the current "Who is Simeon Hobbes" You tube video. I haven't had any luck with the new one. But I would agree - it seems to be part of a url.

  11. Have you guys noticed the Tweets that have been made recently and then taken down from the accounts almost immediately?! I have it set that I get their updates sent to my phone and so I know I'm not imagining them! It's so weird...and FUN!

  13. have you people checkes the image in the back of simmon hobbes page?! i saw it and it is a image of "the fates" if you google that you get this painting, the same, from GOYA... and you have to read what it says!!!!!

"In classical mythology, the fates are three goddesses that control the thread of life. They are the personifications of destiny (or fate). The first, Clotho, spins the thread of life, the second, Lachesis, controls its length, and the third, Atropos, cuts it. They symbolize birth, the passage through life, and death, respectively. Traditionally, Clotho is pictured holding a spool, Lachesis holding a thread coming from the spool, and Atropos cutting the thread with shears.

In Goya's painting The fates (also known as The fate or Atropos), we see the three fates carrying of a man, presumably someone whose thread has just been cut. Clotho is holding an effigy instead of her spool, Lachesis a looking-glass or lens, and Atropos small scissors insteads of her shears."

does it sounds like... jacob?!?!? making every thread like he said to ben!!!! this is soooo the ARG!!!! btw the man in black... he is the one cutting the thread!

  14. just sent a DM to epithetalpha saying "And With This Fire I Purify", and got a DM back saying:"Are you a candidate? Await further instructions May 18."

  16. new epithet alpha status saying "candidate aplications full, await review"

    ReplyDelete
  17. from Epithet Alpha's page - "Candidate applications full." Sounds like Bram and Ilana referring to Lapidus as a possible candidate. Looks like this ARG will focus on that group - likely to be the focus of the final season??

  18. The long string of characters is a 20+ year old encoding protocol called Base 64. I knew it looked familiar, and was some sort of markup or coding, but wasn't sure what kind until I googled it.

Just found a Base 64 decoder and plugged in QW5kIFdpdGggVGhpcyBGaXJlIEkgUHVyaWZ5

Nosce teipsum, Read thyself...for the similitude of the thoughts and passions of one man, to the thoughts and passions of another, whosoever looketh into himself and considereth what he doth when he does think, opine, reason, hope, fear, etc., and upon what grounds; he shall thereby read and know what are the thoughts and passions of all other men upon the like occasions.

  22. If you want to know what the voice is saying in the second video (that you get from the Base 64 translation, And with this fire I purify), it's repeating of words 'sedm' and 'dva' in Czech, which means seven and two :).

    ReplyDelete
  23. About Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos: Anyone noticed that these three guys are central to Stephen King's "Insomnia", which is central to the metaphysical dimensions of the Dark Tower series. See:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insomnia_(novel)#Plot_summary
Its been years since I read that book, but there, Clotho and Lachesis are agents of the purpose, while Atropos is their adversary and agent of random. In the book, theres also a description of different levels of existence, quite freaky as far as I remember.

  24. I'm skeptical about this as an "ARG" considering there is currently no direction to it from any sources. The fact that it is on YouTube account "TheLostExperience" means nothing to me as a TLE player - TPTB never used that account for anything in-game Sam, so I am as-of-yet unconvinced. I'll still follow as the events unfold, however, I likez me some mystery :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. guys, ARGs don't usually tell you, step-by-step, who to follow, where to go, and what your next move should be. they're more subtle than that. they're also usually grounded in something that can be passed off as being rooted within the universe of the story (like the phone number for the Hanso foundation).

some Egyptian god isn't Tweeting instructions for you to "find a phoenix." this seems more like a parody of an ARG than an ARG itself, which is usually a sign of someone who really has no idea what they're doing.

    nothing to see here.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I mean, for Christ's sake, the guy's Twitter location is set to "Tunisia." I don't know if you guys are just gullible or that desperate for Lost stuff now that the season's over, but this is just a horrendously shallow and anvilicious attempt to stir up some followers. maybe this guy made a bet with a friend or something.

  30. Well I don't know too much about Egypt, but do you think that there's any relevance with the twitter account "Raneb?"
He's got something similar to Simeon Hobbes with his image pretty much a mirror of "The eye of Horus," it sketches me out just because he's following all of the Lost pages... but on the other hand maybe that is a good thing.
His name is Ra, and his updates so far has been:

    6 hrs ago:
Userkaf (a Egyptian Pharaoh; set the tradition to build sun temples)
    &

  35. Ok, did anyone notice the candy bar Jack was trying to get-that Jacob got for him from the stuck machine-when he "pushed" jack into the fray-was an Apollo bar?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Apollo

Patron god of the Arts, the gift of prophecy and also connected with light (which in Greek also can be translated illumination). He was born on the island Delos by Leto, a Titan's daughter, and Zeus. The island was to be the most sacred of islands, and ruins of many temples can still be seen there. His sister was Artemis, the goddess of hunting and protecter of young women.
After he killed the huge snake Python in Delphi by the mountains Parnassus, the site was dedicated to him. There, the Omphalos, the navel, stood - a point believed by the ancient Greeks to be the centre of the earth. His oracle there was a place many people, commonmen and rulers, came to consult the priestess, Pythia, about their future.

Real people = probably a "real" site and a dead end, but maybe Epithetalpha just posted link to an existing site to let us know that the number 27 is relevant somehow? 77. The Empire... a reference to Hurley's writing The Empire Strikes Back? Which he never finished?

Esausolon's comment about burning the Bad Twin... Jack tossed the last couple pages of Bad Twin into the fire while Sawyer was reading it, right?

He also references King Lear, 5.3 line 112, which is:
    REGAN - Sick, O, sick!

... which doesn't seem to mean anything.

  78. In his boyhood, around the age of thirteen, Dick had a recurring dream for several weeks. He dreamed he was in a bookstore, trying to find an issue of Astounding Magazine. This issue of the magazine would contain the story titled "The Empire Never Ended", which would reveal the secrets of the universe to him. As the dream recurred, the pile of magazines he searched grew smaller and smaller, but he never reached the bottom. Eventually, he became anxious that discovering the magazine would drive him mad (as in Lovecraft's Necronomicon or Chambers' The King in Yellow, promising insanity to the reader). Shortly thereafter, the dreams ceased, but the phrase "The Empire Never Ended" would appear later in his work. Dick was a voracious reader of religion, philosophy, metaphysics and Gnosticism, ideas of which appear in many of his stories and visions.I seem to recall Locke recommending VALIS to Ben...hmmm

Teneo , MEUS NOMEN EST LOST. VOS Ero ELECTUS 7.1.2009

    Can someone translate?

    ReplyDelete
  80. More on "The Empire Never Ended":

This phrase is from the perplexing book Valis by Philip K. Dick. Read the node, read the book.

At first it seems that this is a fairly obvious (for a Dick book) reminder that the Roman Empire, a manifestation of the Black Iron Prison, which is itself a manifestation of the sickness of our universe Yurugu, has not actually collapsed. It did not actually collapse because the break-up and fall of the Roman Empire occurred during the simulation of time created by the Black Iron Prision after time stopped because of the sacking of the Temple of Jerusalem (70 AD). Time only restarted in 1974 when Horselover Fat had his first encounter with VALIS. What happened during this time did not really happen.

Upon closer inspection, the phrase appears to have deeper meanings. Wouldn't you just know it. The Empire, as noted above is a manifestation of the sickness of our universe, which is called Yurugu. Thus when it is said that the "Empire never ended" we are also saying that the sickness of the universe has never ended. This is an important fact to remember, which is why Fat uses it so often.

  88. Or maybe 'Simeon Hobbes' the name of Anti-Jacob? In the casting calls for each character, Jacob was referred to as 'Justin' and Anti-Jacob was referred to as 'Samuel' - which could be a close approximation 'Simeon', just as 'Justin' is a close approximation to 'Jacob'.

Or this could be another "Aladygma". "Aladygma" had hinged itself on the coattails of the "Cloverfield" ARG and many people were convinced, for months in fact, that "Aladygma" was the ARG for the sequel to "Cloverfield". 'Game Jacks', as they are referred to, are all too common.

However, if The Lost Experience YouTube page is indeed official (or 'In-Game' as it were), then that says a lot. As I remember, The Lost Experience - in reference to the first "Lost" ARG - laid its ground roots on third party websites to add an air of reality to the game (see: Rachel Blake's Blog @ http://rachelblake.blogspot.com/).

Now, one thing to remember is that The Lost Experience launched itself in May of 2006. The TLE YouTube channel, according to "Update #1" on this blog, was registered in March of the same year. Likewise, as I recall, other websites involved in the first ARG were registered months before the game had launched, which is custom. In the world of ARG-ers, websites that pre-date the launch of the game almost immediately certify their validity. If that is any indication, the YouTube channel is, in fact, a confirmation that this new ARG is legitimate.

Though, for the sake of argument, maybe not. Regardless, 'Game Jacks' are never this particularly well thought-out. So, if nothing else, kudos to whoever's designed this 'hoax' - you may have a future in web based promotion. Sure, the jury is still out, but this is looking good. I almost hope it's real because, as a veteran of the original Lost Experience, I can't wait to relive that fun (and aggravation) all over again.

Looked up LBDG on Twitter. Been around forever. Author trying to trick Lost fans into buying his book.

  105. there is another video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czpUwW0QS0A

    and the sequence is

  106. So are Sedum & Dva macedonian?

    ReplyDelete
  107. Sedum and dva are Czech. Still don't know why.

For the record, I just wanted to point out that:

On his blog "Who is Simeon Hobbes" Elliott Graves claims that he will turn 27 in 2 months (Right around Comic Con).

The YouTube user "WhoisSimeonHobbes" that posted the second video which lead to the "candidacy applications" lists his age as 32.

    Significant, or no?

    ReplyDelete
  108. 'sedum' and 'dva' mean 7 and 2 in Macedonian.. in Croatian, Serbian and Czech, too

    ReplyDelete
  109. the question is:
where should we "DM Know Thyself"???

i tried on youtube and twitter, but no repsonse.. plus, these accounts seem not related to the game.. one of them is 3 years old and not used recently, the other one is chinese or korean :S

    ReplyDelete
  110. I don't know which accounts you're referring too. The YouTube accounts? TLE one has been around since TLE which is I think what gives it an air of legitimacy.

So far the three "confirmed" in-game twitter accounts are @simeonhobbes, @epithetalpha and @elliottgraves.

When this all started, there was an opportunity to DM KnowThyself to @epithetalpha, at which time you got a DM back stating "Are you a candidate? Await further instructions May 18."

Shortly thereafter, @epithetalpha tweeted "Candidate applications full. Await review."

The next day (this morning) those of us who were under "candidate review" got a DM from @epithetalpha "THIS IS AIDONEUS. I hacked this account to help you. These people will take everything away from you. BEING A CANDIDATE MEANS THE END."

On the twitter feed the hacker wrote "DEFACED BY AIDONEUS. ¡DON'T TRUST SIMEON HOBBES!"

Then later today @elliottgraves published his first blog entitled "Who is Simeon Hobbes". We're now all waiting for a second blog, while trying to weed out the non participating Twitter accounts.

You can read more about it here: http://lostarg.wordpress.com/

  112. just posted another thing that decodes to "The professor of film holds the question. Tryon is the way towards the Swan." and then has that link again.
What's up with this guy? Isn't he out-of-game?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Yeah. @esausolon seems to be a raging faker. I don't think this proves the entire thing is illegit. @elliottgraves already tweeted something that seemed to indicate that @esausolon, @FleurDeNoire and @edmundloom are not affiliated with him.

  115. It's just so bored dude posting stuff that has already been said on the Simeon Hobbes twitter.

    ReplyDelete
  116. If you look up esausolon's missing posts on tweleted, one has an email address... if you search that, you find that it belongs to a student at Fayetteville, where Tryon is a professor... At least part of this looks like a fan playing around, or maybe using us & twitter in some kind of experiment/project...

    ReplyDelete
  117. Anonymous, I've been thinking the same thing...I'm currently writing a crossmediality paper using Lost ARGs as my main case. Who's to say this isn't a bunch of students doing the same thing, and staging an experiment with us as guinnea pigs?

  119. Just getting in to this..

    Edmund Cartwright (edmundloom)

posted: Arma virumque cano... @mrsmarkham mihi causas memora...

"Arma virumque cano..." means "I sing of arms and of a man..."

"mihi causas memora..." means "recall to me the reasons..."

From The Aeneid by Virgil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeneid)

Had a look at mrsmarkham who has posted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiTHz_walss a video entitled Hen To Pan
    and also posted:

"@edmundloom blessed are your eyes, like those of Caesar, for they see: Tkectfwu cpiwku kp jgtdc:

    Any significance?

    Mark.

    ReplyDelete
  120. "Tkectfwu cpiwku kp jgtdc" is a Caesar cipher (explaining the random Caesar reference). It decodes as a Latin phrase, which further translates to "Richard is the snake in the grass".

  122. The code was a bit too easy to decipher. I'm not good at this stuff at all and I figured out you just shift the letters 2 spaces back in the alphabet to get "Ricardus anguis in herba". Too many fishy things going on to know whats real and whats a hoax (if any is real...).

However, that could be part of it, they clearly want us to pick sides and they should know people will make fake accounts for this stuff. Maybe they want us second guessing who is real/telling the truth and who is not. Or I just have an over-active imagination...

  125. Jeez - now I know what it feels like to actually be on the island. We don't know who to trust, who is real (or what is), and every time I check the tweets there's some new character spinning us off in another direction. Does it really matter if this is real or not? It *is* happening in your present, isn't it? Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Just an FYI.

I wiki'd the name SIMEON and it says that Simeon was a son of Jacob. It also mentions the 12 tribes of Isreal etc.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simeon

You probably already knew this, but I just thuoght I would throw it in there.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I know that we are all looking forward to the last LOST ARG ever but this all seems too soon and to simple to be real. Follow this person then they give us a link and talk about another person that we can follow. ARG's are usually more complicated than this. Also there are just too many fakers on Twitter to keep things separated between what is true and what is fake. I don't trust this one. I'm just going to wait until Comic-Con to see what comes of this. If I end up being late on this I am late. Oh well. I hope it is real though. I hate when people try to strike things up on there own and lead people on a wild goose chase for something that isn't canon!

    ReplyDelete
  128. If you look at TheCruxAnsata's latest post, he says something about there being many different people to follow with there being only one true way.

I bet you anything we're going to have to "choose our allegiance" and that will affect what we see in the ARG?

    ReplyDelete
  129. The phoenix stuff from the start is interesting... If it does hold water then Jacob being pushed into a fire may not be the end of him. Phoenix from the flames?

    ReplyDelete
  130. is there a limit to who can play??

    ReplyDelete
  131. just a quick note: if you click the "follow" link on the 100 pictures a day part of the 27 project whatever, it goes to some blog with a candle now. it was drawn inverted?? it was posted back in january though...

    ReplyDelete
  132. Just sign up to Twitter which is free and then follow the characters mentioned on here. Then feel your brain dribble out your nose as your get far too involved :-)

    ReplyDelete
  133. So I decoded the first paragraph of that letter. The results probably also need to be decoded, but I'm not sure how. Further paragraphs to follow.

This definately has to be the new arg, people are still questioning it, but there is far too much stuff being linked together for this to be a coincidence...

    ReplyDelete
  155. It's morse code:

    ReplyDelete
  156. The Valenzetti website has a YouTube video that further complicates things - it's attributed to tidowave.com (a Greenpeace-type org) and there's a comment from MissingTeddyHanssen, which has another missing brother, in addition to Nathaniel Graves: missingteddyhanssen.blogspot.com/

    ReplyDelete
  157. Oh, wait - this might have crossed over into the Cloverfield ARG. Overlapping ARGs?

    ReplyDelete
  158. the Valenzetti site isn't a part of the ARG, it mentions multiple times that it has no relation to ABC

    ReplyDelete
  159. Not sure if twitter.com/edmundloom is part of the ARG or not, but he posted an encrypted message.

Using simeonhobbes as the key, I came up with this:

    ReplyDelete
  160. Actually, I think that the Valenzetti site might have some relation, since in the "about me" section (url: http://www.valenzettifoundation.org/enrico.html) it says "I have lived in Italy, Los Angeles (Pasadena), and Switzerland and travel a great deal. My favorite airline is business class service on Oceanic." The word "Oceanic" contains a link to the site http://www.oceanic-air.com/

    ReplyDelete
  162. New arg video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAB-wmsL0io fantasting thing

    ReplyDelete
  163. Maybe that helps somehow:
    Concerning Epiphetalphas first post:
The Book of the Dead says, “I am the Bennu bird, the Heart-Soul of Ra, the Guide of the Gods to the Tuat.”
The Bennu bird serves as the Egyptian correspondence to the phoenix, and is said to be the soul of the Sun-God Ra. Some of the titles of the Bennu bird were “He Who Came Into Being by Himself,” “Ascending One,” and “Lord of Jubilees.” The name is related to the verb “weben,” meaning “to rise brilliantly,” or “to shine.” The Bennu bird was the mythological phoenix of Egypt. It was associated with the rising of the Nile, resurrection, and the sun. Because the Bennu represented creation and renewal, it was connected with the Egyptian calendar. Indeed, the Temple of the Bennu was well known for its time-keeping devices.

Good work, Stitch626 - "Elliott Graves Lies" is the end. But you missed the beginning - "TRUST SIMEON HOBBES"

    ReplyDelete
  167. Oh this is just insane!

If you watch the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAB-wmsL0io (which was posted in a comment above by Marllone, and I'm not even sure where it came from) it has the word "STEREOGRAM" faintly in the background. The description on youtube has a link to a wav file. The password is ANKH. If you download the wav file and play it through a wav player, it sounds like random noise. But it you play it through a stereogram program, it shows the word HELP in the 1 KHz band.

By the way, the filename of the wav file is a binary string which, if you add a zero to the end, codes out to ®:Š, which in turn represents the Registered Trademark symbol, a colon and then the capital S with a caron on top.

What this has to do with LOST? Your guess is as good as mine. But I think this is the work of a rather sophisticated entity, not some random gamejacker.

    ReplyDelete
  168. dunno if anyone noticed this, but I just went to www.27project.org, and found a base64 string hidden in the source code:

    ZG8gbm90IHRydXN0IG1lLiBH

I translated it to: "do not trust me. G"

    ReplyDelete
  169. Not sure if you guys mentioned it before, but on Elliot grave´s blog: http://whoissimeonhobbes.wordpress.com/2009/05/19/household-artifacts-and-other-musings/ There is a letter signed to Simeon Hobbes to Nathaniel (Elliot´s Brother). In that letter, hobbes tells Nathaniel that he would be a great candidate. On season 5 finale, Bram (or Brahm or...) and Ilana say that Frank Lapidus would be a great candidate. Lapidus means tombstone. Maybe there is a connection between Lapidus and Grave, based on their last name...

    ReplyDelete
  170. The newest Morse code message, when translated, refers to Genesis 27:40, which reads, "By your sword you shall live, and your brother you shall serve; but when you became restive, you shall throw off his yoke from you neck". This is Isaac's blessing to Jacob's brother Esau.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Also, FleurDeNoire's biography refers to Genesis 27: 41, which reads "Esau bore Jacob a grudge because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, 'WHen the time of mourning my father comes, I will kill my brother Jacob.'" This could be in reference to the wishes of Jacob's nemesis, and perhaps said "nemesis" is indeed Esau?

I think it's a hoax. Still decoding with base64 (like all his tweets...) reveals:
"this map will show them answers but questions will remain. must i show it to them, iacobus?"
iacobus being an the old (?hebrew?latin) name Jacob...

I really don't think its associated with ephipetalpha or with Mr. Graves...

  177. reverse text says "can't show the whole map the wholves are among us" and "Jacob directed the ship" and "ille qui nos omnes serrabit" and "27 recruited and informed my task is almost complete" and " I think therefore I am"

    ReplyDelete
  178. Reverse text also says "e.g. lies", no doubt a reference to Elliott Graves.

Lower left base 64 reads, "the 'storm' is coming".

"Sedes" means "seat" (reference to Jacob's chair?)

"eos sto" means roughly, "these stand" or possibly "he stands" (though if he stands, why would he need a chair?)

"patefacio" means to disclose, expose, or make open

"incola foris" means roughly, a resident of a place, abroad (or outside). Perhaps an expatriate, or someone banished?
