At any rate, its a good thing Lostpedia has some HD fans with freakishly sublime vision. So what we got, well a number of things:
1) Its a man found dead (man of New York, i.e. must be his home state)
2) First name possibly begins with a J.
3) Last name ending in "antham"?
4) Found after 4a.m.
5) Died in "The Tower" (Apartments?) on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, possibly a reference to the as-yet-unbuilt Grand Avenue Project.
Like the last point, nice continuity. Thoughts?
UPDATE - Like this I read on Lostpedia's article - "Ted", "The Tower", and "beam" are all references to central characters or places in Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series of books, and other books that allude to the Dark Tower, such as "Hearts in Atlantis"
We know the writers love King's work, so a good easter egg possibility. Also liking the idea that it could be a reference to the philosopher guy, Jeremy Bentham. Again, something the writers like.
Noooooo, not Jason Statham! I don't think I can go through life without Transporter 3!
ReplyDeleteSomeone claims to have made it out to be "Jeremy Bentham" which would make a lot of sense with the philosphers' names motif that we've had so far. That would probably be someone we haven't met yet then. Also, when I looked at the paper, all I could make out was the word "rafters". Sounds like a suicide if I read it right.
ReplyDeleteAgree most likely is Jeremy Bentham for the reason you state. Bentham is associated with the principle of the greater good (greatest utility is that which benefits the greatest number of people) as the most basic guiding principle for decision-making.
ReplyDeleteUm... how about Jacob? What if it is Jacob's funeral. Since Kate wasn't that interested but knew him.
ReplyDeleteI would of thought it was James..he had no family..maybe Kate had moved beyond him and Jack when she returned to this world. Anyway this 'flash forward' is only a possible future and probably will never come to fruition. It's funny though, I am a big fan of 'Dark Tower' and I noted parallels a long time ago. As well as to other religions/philosphies.
ReplyDeleteI think it's either Ben or Locke. After all, Jack said "Forgive Me" before he was going to jump. Both Ben and John tried to warn him that getting off the island was a big mistake. Perhaps Ben's tumor came back after the rescue or perhaps John killed himself. No one came to the viewing, makes sense to be Ben since no one (Kate's reaction also) would want to goto his funeral.
ReplyDeletethere are 3 more years of this show, the person in the coffin in most likely someone in which we have not met. although the name starts with the letter J...Jacob? just a thought.
ReplyDeleteI also believe it might be about Ben's funeral.
ReplyDeleteBut then again... the way Kate told Jack she had to leave because "he is going to find out", makes me believe that Kate is having a relationship with Ben, and the man under the coffin could be James (Sawyer).
Also, a name before "... of New York" couldn't be grammatically correct, so I don't believe "...antham" is the dead persons last name.
"The body of J..... ....antham of New York was ...." just doesn't sound good.
My guess is sayer. The J is for james, but i dont know what the atham is. Sayer would explain jack not being a friend or family member but still sad.
ReplyDeleteIf you zoom in you would see the name is starting with "Jo ..." I believe it is John Lock. Reason is he did not want to leave the island and was not a friend or family just an aquantence.
ReplyDeleteKate is with Sawyer, she would not be with Ben (yuck!) Jack is a lost soul and needs to find peace within himself. JMO
So you can see something like... "Ted (unreadable) a bellman at The Tower... (unreadable) heard loud noises.. (unreadable) from (insert name)'s loft. The place where you would insert the name seems to be about the same length as the mysterious "antham" and appears to be ending with an m (or possibly an N). It then goes on to mention something about a beam... (suicide?)
ReplyDeleteit has to be sawyer. it makes sense because no one came to the viewing of the coffin, and only jack and kate care about him. plus, his name starts with a 'j,' james...
ReplyDeleteTake a look at the scene where Jack is standing over the coffin and the camera is above again. That coffin does not appear to me to be adult size...
ReplyDeleteIt was very loud when I watched the ending with my friends so I might have missed some details that would prove otherwise but could the person possibly be Juliet? It starts with a J and I don't know her last name. It would make sense that Jack is deeply disturbed about it and Kate doesn't really care. Juliet's sister was the only family she had left and she had cancer so that could explain why no one showed up. Jack would have been responsible for taking her off the island which would explain why he said forgive me. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteThere's no way it's Sawyer in the casket, folks. He's one of the most popular characters on the show - they're not going to kill him off before the end. And it's clear that the flash forward is not the end of the story: It set up lots more action (possibly a return to the island?) before the story in total is resolved.
ReplyDeletePlus, the love triangle keeps lots of viewers tuning in. They will milk that story for as long as possible. That's why it's likely that when Kate said "he'll be wondering where I am" she was talking about Sawyer. (Notice she didn't say, "my boyfriend will be wondering" or "Joe will be wondering" - when she says "he" it's clear that Jack understands who she's talking about.)
These writers and producers are smart people; they're not going to shoot themselves in the foot by prematurely ending a very popular storyline.
This is probably a stretch. When I first saw the funeral scene I thought it was Michael, Walt's dad. Let's face it, he would have had to assume a new identity since he wouldn't want to be associated with anything that happened on the island. He definitely would not have been considered a friend of anyone. As for Sawyer, the coffin is to small, he would have never fit unless one of the side affects of leaving the island is shrinkage. Just throwing it out there. But I would concur that most likely it is a character that we have not met yet.
ReplyDeleteWhy was the funeral in a black neighborhood that seemed to be fairly poor?
ReplyDeleteMaybe its Micheal using an alias, he is from New York and he left on a raft.
ReplyDeleteI've read elsewhere (Stereogum) that the name was John Latham. It seems to me that this must be a character that hasn't been introduced. So just who the hell is John Latham anyway?
ReplyDeleteI agree with the last person.
ReplyDeleteThe man's name is John Lantham. He must be someone they are going to meet on the island. On that paper it read that the man committed suicide, as he was found hanging from a beam in his apartment building at 4:00 A.M. It also seemed like a Jewish funeral parlor and I think that the He Kate was referring to was most likely Sawyer.
did anyone elce notice that the coffin was quite small?
ReplyDeletesurely not big enough for a grown man.
but then again ben is quite short!..
I just notice that the main character name of "The Talisman" Stepehen King's book is Jack Sawyer...

Full obituary text:
quote:
"The body of John Lantham of New York was found shortly after 4 a.m. in the 4300 block of Grand Avenue.
Ted Worden, a doorman at the Tower Lofts complex, heard loud noises coming from the victim's loft. Concerned for the tenants' safety, he entered the loft and found the body hanging from a beam in the living room.
According to Jaime Ortiz, a police spokesman, the incident was deemed a suicide after medical tests. Lantham (sic) is survived by one teenaged son.
Memorial services will be held at the Hoffs-Drawlar Funeral Home tomorrow evening."
What if J stands for Jacob ? The invisible "leader" of the others. He could have been dead when he was a child, and has been "ressurected" by the island's healing power or he may simply have been declared dead because he had special powers
ReplyDelete( invisibility, levitation, etc )
If i read right you can definetely see the words "...according..." and "...room..." beside Jack's left thumb on two different lines. If that helps anyone.
