First off, as far as Rousseau's accounts in early seasons differing fromo what we see in S5: there is always the possibility that Jin wasn't a part of things originally.

As far as watching all 5 seasons, Netflix now has all of them available in their Watch Instantly service, so if you've got Netflix and a TiVo or another streaming box, you can catch them all (which is how I'm rewatching them right now).

I think it's safe to say Danielle went insane. The writers for the most part have been great on their game. I doubt when they were writing the young Danielle story in season 5 they didn't research their work in previous seasons/episodes. Makes Ben screaming to Keamy out the window about how he rescued Alex from an insane woman make even more sense now.

I agree Sam seems like maybe the numbers are another paradox caused by Hurley. I feel we have enough of an explanation on them. Between their purpose to Dharma and a potential paradox. For them being a curse to Hurley? I think it's safe to chalk that up to destiny/fate.

I totally agree that Hurley was the voice reading the Numbers in that broadcast. I saved a clip of it here when I first wrote about it in April.

Now that Season 5 has ended the way it did, I'm wondering how that can be resolved in the timeline. I may just be wrong, but man that sounds like Hurley!

It could be that the writers just introduced too many threads to tie them all together by the end. Will this detail just get dropped, in favor of more Kate/Jack/Sawyer love triangles?

Per Lostpedia the numbers are the end result of an equation predicting the end of life or something to that effect. Supposedely the Dharama was set up to somehow find a way to change the equation to change the numbers and prevent this.
Once I read that, I quit worrying over the numbers except in the sense that they do keep popping up.
Shame on me..I forgot all about the Eastern culture stuff of Dhrama. There are too many thingies to keep up with sometimes.
Watching the episodes again reminds me of just how weird Locke is. He is still a favorite character of mine in spite of that.

I just watched all the seasons for the first time actually, and I'm loving reading all these theories and recaps! I was able to find most of season 5 on surfthechannel.com. A few episodes were missing, so I bought those on iTunes, and watched the last few on ABC.com. Hope that helps!

Dharma definitely means something in a 'real' language Ace W. Its rooted in Sanskrit. In Hindi, dharma in its simplest context means duty OR religion/faith. But it has a deeper spiritual implication. In Hinduism it stands for a path of righteousness or one's duty or way of life that will help one come closer to the 'truth' of the universe. This path is often chosen for one before he comes into being. One has to fulfill one's obligations (moral, physical, spiritual) and follow the road laid out so as to fit into the pattern of the universe. You can see this in the Dharma Initiative. Recruits had a role that was pre-determined and defined for them already. They were there to carry out a specific job - which also kind of defined them. All DI members wore suits that had their names and jobs. The idea is that everyone has a place in the universe and they are part of an intricate structure. This makes a lot of more sense now that we've seen the Season 5 finale.

OMG!!! I LOVE YOU ALL. SAM, JOYCE, BRIAN, BDUB, and anyone else I may have missed, you guys are all awsome. I don't what these thread turning into mindless squabling, so thank you for your support. It's exactly what I needed to be able to let my mind "/ignore" these anon's.

As for the post started with, "From the mind of Ace Willco", I cannot take credit for, but did find hysterical.

I am kinda schocked we don't have a sigle numbers theory in this post, I figured we'd get atleast one.

I also getting concerned with the numbers and the numerous references to different religions. I really starting to question wheather both of these concepts are just wild goose chases. Joyce I believe you've missed the referenceing of some of the more eastern cultures. I've seen many posts across the sites relating alot of Dharma related objects and ideas to these eastern cultures. There is one sticking out in my head of the blast door map being very similar to ( I wanna say Hindu but I could so be wrong) the map of the elements of the world. Also I think I read somewhere that Dharma actually has another meaning in a real language. Lastly I do remember that the brainwashing video makes reference to Nirvana(witch I think is buddist). My Eastern culture knowledge needs some brushing up.

But to the point with all there references and none of us being able to put these ideas into any kind of solid theory means, 1. Really really good writing. 2. We are horrible horrible wrong about EVERYTHING :P

Thank again all for the creative and insightful post that you guys with handles have put up. They have been a pleasure to read, and have really helped me get good perspective on certain aspects of the show.

Brain everytime I think I have a handle on Lost it throws me for a loop. That is what makes it so good. We can blog and guess til the final episode and probably never guess where this show is taking us. Over 5 years we have been led all over mythology, Bible, Egyptian and probably some small bits of Greek/Roman stuff if we look hard enough.
Perhaps some of the continuity issues we find are just as simple as the producers didn't know that this show would make it to the wire. They didn't realize that little things like the appearance of the numbers or even the waterfall would be singled out or noticed by the fans.
Ace Wilco your blogs are great fun to read..love the name.

Back to serious things: I'm really intrigued by the sheer amount of biblical/Christian references in the series. It's very striking that the episode isn't named "The Numbers," which would make more sense, but is named like the fourth book of the Bible. The first season ends with "Exodus" (Part I and II) and there are other biblically-titled episodes. I can't, for the life of me, see any connection between the numbers and the book of Numbers, but I think it's one of many hints given by Darlton.

I could try to figure out theories, but I surely will not be able to guess where it is going. I would be surprised if the historical and biblical conflict between Israel and Egypt didn't work it's way into the show. I don't mean modern Middle East tensions, but in the Bible Moses led the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt about 3500 years ago, and as recently as 2000 years ago, Joseph and Mary took baby Jesus to Egypt to escape Herod.

Again, how the heck that fits into "Lost" is beyond me right now, but I don't hear/read a lot of people commenting on that issue.

As for the available show's on ABC.com.
ABC was the only network I knew of that was making full season available for it's viewers to watch. I wouldn't be surprised and are changing over to the format that ever other station is useing (witch is only posting the last 5-ish episodes it's released). I was also under the understanding that Hulu is owned by FOX networks. I don't think they'd be airing ABC's work. Also I know from Family Guy Hulu only keeps up the most recent few episodes.

As for the numbers them selves... I have nothing to say, I will not bore ppl with another numbers theory.

Good job. The numbers may be one of those unexplained mysteries, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were a part of the fundamental explanations behind the island, the time loops, etc.

I wondered, after watching this episode, who was broadcasting the numbers originally. Both Rousseau and Sam Toomey (and Leonard) heard the original broadcast in 1988. I hope we find this out.

I tried going to ABC's website to watch "This Place Is Death" again, but they only have last few episodes of Season 5. Does anyone know what's going on with that? For a while, they didn't have any Season 5 episodes available, and now they only have the last six episodes. Sam, can you and Lostpedia exert any pressure on ABC to put all of the Season 5 episodes back online? That would be great, as I don't want to wait for the DVDs to be released.

Perhaps the reason the numbers appear different on the 2004 hatch is because the original was blown to smithereans in the Incident and they had to build the whole thing over again. Of course if the bomb worked and changed history that is a moot point.
I don't think the bomb was what worked..it just got mixed in with the Incident. And that is what forced Dhrama to start building the Swan over with a different looking set of numbers.
It seems as though Dhrama writes or says the numbers over and over like a chant that will change the end result of the equatioon.
If time keeps resetting maybe that is how theu keep the world going til they can really solve it. Jacob and MIB don't need an equation, they just repeat their age old battle with each new group that arrives.
Perhaps when the final stage of the time repeats occur time will end for ever. Are they perhaps doing an "end times" here?
