The rewatch has me really focused on Jack and Locke's relationship. They met at the crash and Jack lead John to help the trapped person. After that, they went their own ways, following their own directions, and didn't like each other very much--at least Jack didn't like Locke; Locke seemed aloof towards Jack. Then they had their confrontation after Boone's death (similarly as bad as when Jack tries to call with the satellite phone seasons later)--but once Locke leads Jack on his path--towards the hatch--they seem to join forces, sort of.
In this episode, Locke and Jack disagreed on the action they should take as far as Danielle kidnapping Aaron. But when they see the pillar of smoke, they look to each other and both agree that the hatch is the way to go to protect their people. And thus they join forces again.
Could these two be the Jacob/Nemesis of the first 4 seasons?

I wanna get this note outta the way (an become the ubernerd). I read in an "offical" Star Wars book that covers after Return of the Jedi. It states that Chewy and Han can understand each other. Not only that but Chewy has a speech impedement that actually allows Han to understand him easier. Also alluding to the fact that Han prob. wouldn't be able to understand Chewy if he didn't have this speech problem.

Anyone ever hear the theory the C3po and R2D2 are the real main characters of Star Wars? This is mainly because they are the only characters in all 9 episodes. I feel the same way kinda about vincent.

To cover somethings mentioned here and in 1x22. Michael sucks, shannon sucks, Boone sucks, Ana Sucks, yankees suck, Knicks suck...oh god got carried away there so sorry.

As for the Blackrock, I've been intrigued by the ship since I found out it was a ship. I have to believe the ship seen in season 5 is the blackrock. There seem to have been too much work into the blackrock for it to be anything else. I believe when I was researching the semi-connal video games I came across infromation that widmore bid on the firstmates diary of the blackrock.
Also where did this idea that richard came in on the blackrock? I'd love to know if this idea is based on information I'm missing.
Finally, I've started to see some Moses and Aaron comparision poping up nowadyas. I think it was in the 1x22 rewatch someone made the comparision of Locke being like Moses. It was something to the effect of a stranger leading people in a strange land. This reminds me alot of Jack's tatoo. Witch i'm not remembering a good translation (if someone could help me out it would be appreciated) so I'm not going to botch it. Anyways if you apply the moses leadership to Jack (I think with his tattoo it makes more sense). and add that to the fact that apparently Jack is related to Aaron. We end up with a stronger bible reference. Not sure where this idea goes, but feel free to jump in and take this last idea away from me.

I don't think we ever confirmed that the ship Jacob and MIB saw was the Black Rock. It sure seems like the most likely answer, but I thought I read somewhere that the boat was quite similar to the one Richard was building in the bottle. Perhaps we were witnessing Richard's arrival on the island, not the Black Rock's.

Great synopsis. This story and some of the other things have led me to think that it's about Jack and Locke more than we think. Maybe Jack has to sacrifice himself for Locke and Locke will be the next Jacob?

I mean we go from them just being at odds, Jack wanting to shoot Locke, Jack leaving, Jack thinking Locke might have something, Jack moving into the position of faith in the Island, Jack saying to Richard not to give up on Locke...

I think Danielle was a sad case. Most of her stories to the Losties seemed made up. If she really ran like Ben told her to do maybe she didn't know jack.

Since we have seen the real kidnapping of Alex we know there was no black smoke to warn her. She was great at surviving and probably told that to panic and scatter the Losties so she could steal Aarpm.

We all agree on at least one point..we love to hate Michael. It was poetic justice that he got off the island but was still such an ass that he couldn't kill himself. In saving Walt (who didn't want to leave the Island) he lost everything.

He came back and redeemed himself and goodbye to him. Desmond started out unlikeable to me. He ran off the first chance he got and got brought back. Good deal. He was a standup guy at the end though.

For some reason I never warmed up to Mr. Ecko. He was so smug, but he had a sad back story.

I find it interesting that everyone's interested in Vincent. It seems the dog could very well prove to be something significant... or perhaps the writers don't have the guts to kill off an animal.

Anyway, I'm most concerned about two things: the title of this episode and the Black Rock. The Black Rock is still shrouded in mystery. Slaves? Dynamite? The middle of the island? (If it had black slaves and white slave traders, we'd have the theme of black and white again.)

As for the title, it's another biblical title, the second of the first season. Both ("Numbers" and "Exodus") are from the Pentateuch or the first five books of the Bible. I wouldn't be surprised if "Genesis" were a title next season, but it seems that Moses and Aaron and their conflict with Egypt are popping up as references. In my personal rewatch, I'm halfway through Season 2, which has more biblical references, thanks in large part to Mr. Eko.

The logic of a dog not being able to survive a plane crash doesn't really work when you consider that NOBODY is really able to survive a plane crash. If you follow the above logic, it leads you to the conclusion that everyone is, or should be, dead. Of course, the reason they aren't is probably the island, not because they were in the back or had flotation devices or anything like that.

In conclusion, the dog is alive for the same reasons as the other survivors. Unfortunately, these reasons have yet to be found out (womp wah).

well id Jacob is vincent... that'd be weird, seeing the producers have said that vincent would survive the entire series, and if something is inside him and he is dead.. that kindoff can't be correct..

And I really hated Michael... he killed ana and libby, in one of the most shocking lost scenes for me (juliet's almost death being one of those moments too)... I was so angry when he got to escape the island with walt... but my one happy thought with it was... good riddance.. So I was really happy he faced his death in S4, even tough the libby past could've been explained better then the entire Michael episode... but that's my opinion ^^

There have been a number of discussions regarding Vincent here and elsewhere but you bring up a very interesting point: How does a dog survive a plane crash...especially from the luggage bay? The answer is it probably doesn't. This ties in perfectly with the idea that a body has to be deceased before it can be occupied by either Jacob or the MIB.

I've had several different thoughts about Vincent but this one is the most logical and easy to explain.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jacob uses Vincent as a tool. But we know who Jacob is now. You'd think we would have fewer "Jacob is ____!" theories, but I guess with Nemesis man inhabiting Locke, they're never going to end.

I do love the second season, but I am so not a fan of Michael. I was glad when he disappeared for several episodes during the season.

Maybe it was just a way for the writers to mislead us with none of the others present to reveal the information...
I think Sawyer was somewhat typified by this episode, in that he acts tough and reclusive but once he opens up, he really makes connections with the other characters.

The last scene where the sad/epic music plays while the raft departs and then it sharply cuts to the black smoke for a second before it ends is a classic finish to an episode. Even though the smoke didn't end up being that important.
