The Lost Rewatch: 2x01 "Man of Science, Man of Faith" and 2x02 "Adrift"

And thus we begin season two, with the introduction of one of my favorite characters ever. After season one's ending with that infamous cliffhanger, season two begins with a bang. With the Hatch now open, Kate and Locke ignore Jack's warnings and venture down the shaft without him.

  • We meet Desmond under the hatch. Ah, Desmond, the Scotsman who will soon become an integral part to the show. Who could imagine the show without him now?
  • Sarah's wreck from the flashbacks killed Adam Rutherford. If you look closely, you can see Shannon in the scene.
  • Jack's key is magnetically attracted to the concrete wall. That's because of the electromagnetism from that particular spot, where DHARMA found it.
I know they are shorter synopses this week, but on to episode two!

  • The shark that's harassing Michael and Sawyer has somehow escaped the Hydra DHARMA station, where a harness was seen in the tank that Jack was being held prisoner in.
  • The "Others" that Jin talks about are actually the tail section survivors.
I'm sorry that this blog is so short and uninteresting, but there is not much new content to work with. See you next week on the Lost Rewatch.

  1. I think there are some small points which may be significant:

In "MOSMOF," how does Sarah heal? It's supposedly a miracle. Ever since "One of Us," when Ben promises that Jacob will cure Rachel, I have to wonder if Jacob didn't have anything to do with Sarah's miraculous recovery.

Also, in "Adrift," despite the flashback story being last-minute and rather pointless, it does have one little tidbit: in Susan's law office, there's a model ship that looks very much like the Black Rock. This may mean nothing, but it's interesting.

  2. You have missed a huge part of MOSMOF that still hasn't been answered - Why and how Walt appeared to Shannon speaking backwards. No offence intended, I'm sure you are a busy man, but it does make me question whether you have rewatched the episode.

In addition, the hatch on the inside had the words 'QUARANTINE' written on it, there is a bunch of stuff you can talk about about the sickness, with Desmond also giving a shot to himself in the opening to prevent him getting the sickness.

In Adrift, there is a bunch of stuff on The Snowman Joke, the Virgin Mary Statue Charlie has (this becomes more important later on in the season with Eko and Claire), Kate finding food, like chocolate bars and such (The food supply drops that still occur 12 years after the Purge) and The Numbers are first typed into the computer.

I also thought how it was interesting this is the first time, and not the last time Jin is floating in the sea, his fate unknown at the beginning of a season. I liked the conversation between Sawyer and Michael, and how Sawyer calls the Island 'home', which it will be for him for the next three years. In addition, Sawyer lost all the bullets except one - the one that subsequently kills Shannon.

Yes I know these two episodes weren't great in mythology, but it's still good to find little interesting points which can define the rest of the Season.

  3. does anyone find the use of the snowman riddle as a means to identify dharma people similar to the way the ajira passengers used the "what lies in the shadow of the statue" riddle to identify pro-jacob people?

  4. Hey, I love the rewatch blog. Just to explain why some people hate the short posts, it is interesting when you go through the episodes plot and weave in interesting themes or questions from stuff we know about the future of the show. I know I'm more in to it when you explain what the episode is about if its a certain character-centric episode and how the episode falls into the larger narrative. I'm sure ur busy and people appreciate ur work but the long posts are so good that it makes the short posts bad in comparison.

  5. When I see people write "it makes me question whether you have rewatched the episode" I skip reading the comment. Thanks for updating the blog so much :)

  6. and what lies behind the concrete wall?
I guess Jugheads core went off, but DHARMA was able to contain the contamination… what happened, happened.

  7. Fair enough, Jeff and Jenn, if you don't want to read my comment. Yes I love reading the rewatch blogs as well, I have certainly found out a few things that I didn't spot when I was rewatching it, all I was doing was giving a few points on what I noticed in the episodes.

  8. I love the character of Desmond, too. It's interesting that the show begins with a shot of his eye. The eye theme is still out there - on Jacob's tapestry, the eye of Horus appears at the top. Also, Desmond is dressed in white. As I've written earlier, I'm looking hard for black and white. Does that tell us that Desmond a "good guy" or is it meaningless?

Has there been an explanation for the shots that he gives himself? I'm assuming it's a placebo and the idea was that the people in the Swan were meant to believe that they couldn't leave without those HAZMAT suits for fear of getting sick. It reminds of the shots that Claire received from Ethan when she was pregnant.

I also wonder if Jacob had a hand in "fixing" Sarah and if it's just coincidence that Desmond was there at that time. I'm guessing there is no coincidence on this show.

The appearance of a dripping-wet Walt, speaking backwards (apparently saying “Don’t push the button. Button bad.”) is still unexplained. How does he do that? How does he appear later in this season and also in Season 3 when Locke is shot?

In "Adrift," I noticed that Black Rock-like model of a ship, too. I also noticed that polar bear stuffed animal that Michael gives a very young Walt, because the bear is white with some black (and, of course, the island will have a polar bear). Finally, I noticed that Michael's lawyer said his custody battle for Walt would be like David fighting Goliath - another small biblical reference, but one all the same.

  9. "Sarah's wreck from the flashbacks killed Adam Rutherford. If you look closely, you can see Shannon in the scene."

You can? I looked, and can't see her anywhere. I know Jack appears in her flashback to that day, but I can't see Shannon in Jack's flashback. Anyone know where to look?

  10. I believe the Walt in this episode to be a manifestation of the smoke monster to help MIB achieve his loophole endgame. I think he is telling the losties not to push the button in hopes that the hatch will blow up and essentially forward his chances of killing Jacob. The events post-hatch blow up help the losties get rescued(due to the massive EMP output), and therefore requires John Locke to leave (and subsequently die) and give MIB his chance to become Locke when the Ajira flight crashes.

  11. I've been feeling the Walt appearances to Shannon will be some the biggest irrelevant and unexplained mysteries of the show.

However, Loophole815, I like you explanation of how it could be connected to Black Shirt's larger scheme.

I've just been clinging to the idea that Black Shirt/Smokie can only manifest itself as people who's dead bodies are physically on the island. Alas, this doesn't explain why it can manifest itself as off-island horses, Ben's mom, and Medusa spiders that kill inconsequential characters. I guess it might as well be able to manifest itself as Walt.

I've always thought Walt's appearances were different though. Like they had something to do with Walt's other supernatural bird-killing abilities.

  12. It seems like Walts "special" powers may have been maturing as he grows older. For example, when he appears to Locke as he lies shot in the open grave, he no longer talks backwards, and tells him what to do.

As for the dripping wet part, during this time frame, Walt and Michael are on a boat headed back to civiliazation, so perhaps his physical location is affecting his psychic projection.

  13. All I can say is Jack Shepherd is an asshole. "You don't even know what you're running from" whats any of it got to do with you jack?

  14. I think Walt was just a manifestation of the island, coming from the same source as when Locke sees him in the Dharma grave.

I had a lot of fun with 'quarantine' theories, back when these episodes first aired, and when I wasn't that into Lost. I think now that it clearly was just a scam by Dharma to keep them in there. I thought at the time that it was a purgatory thing, like not being able to go anywhere, ie heaven or hell.

The Black Rock-esque models keep popping up, I think that is more going to be an Easter Egg than anything else. Just a nice little 'constant' throughout all the time lines that we see

  15. I really liked Man of Science as it continues to show why Jack battles with Locke--it's his destiny. Jack claims to be a man of science, yet he fails to accept what he observes with his own eyes--Christian walking on the island, black smoke pulling Locke, the ship in the middle of the island, and Desmond, someone he's met, in the hatch. He has proof the island is strange, yet he keeps saying it's impossible.

This whole epi was how Jack refuses to believe, hope, have faith, even with proof. His destiny is to believe in something. And Locke is the one who confronts Jack with his issues, over and over, and whose death eventually breaks thru Jack's barrier. HIs final note to Jack even wished he had believed. Both Christian "Give hope." and Desmond "You don't believe in miracles?" confront him with how reality can be strange--miracles can happen. Jack still speaks doubt to both, even tho the miracle happened and Sarah could walk. Could getting Jack to believe be part of Jacob's plan?

I loved how Locke does what he wants--what he believes. He's not a follower, and also doesn't need others to follow him. He goes his own way. He leads people one at a time: Charlie, Boone, Kate, Michael. His influence is so much more personal than Jacks.

I loved when he said to Jack, "I heard Desmond say he knew you. Now that would be impossible." Jack's face was so blank. Locke confronts him again--spot on!

  16. Adrift was not as important on final events, since Michael will not be part of the final events on the island, but there were a few interesting points.
-I loved how Sawyer is already showing signs of being the hero. He saves Michael, calls for Jin with concern, and tells Michael he used the gun to try to save Walt.
-Michael and his ex fighting over custody of Walt, but both will die, setting Walt adrift in his life alone.
-Desmond to Locke: Are you him? Locke has faith and says yes. Well, maybe not right now, but in the end.
-Thought it was strange how Locke showed signs of losing faith when it came time to push the button. Was it because he believed the island was natural and this was a machine, not part of the island's wishes?

  17. In regards to Walt appearing and speaking backwards, then later on speaking with Locke. Something I noticed when re-watching "Three Minutes" was Ms. Klugh asking Michael, "Does Walt appear in places he is not supposed to be?". This could be a direct reference to the times we see Walt when he is supposed to be "somewhere else".

  20. Have the rewatch blogs stopped??? Why was Goodwin not buried like the others are supposed to be or cremated in a funeral service like colleen. We know that ben and juliet knew his body was there. i thought Richard said something about the others bodies in season 5

  21. Hmm. Seems like the excuse for brief posts in season one was b/c the relevant stuff didn't start happening till season two. So where are the posts? Something tells me we're on the verge of getting a whole bunch of mini-posts. What, do you guys have jobs or something? Get your priorities straight!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. uhm... why isn't there any new rewatch blog?

I think we'll get one blog for like 5 episodes at once....

  23. Why all the promises about how great the season 2 blogs will be and yet we have received nothing at all??? I mean even I would have done something for the rewatch followers if i had known the website administrators wouls be acting so inefficiently. Why ask us fans to particiapate with your website in a rewatch if you don't contribute?

  24. Hi guys. I haven't been involved in the organizing of the Lost Rewatch at all, so even as a blogger here there's little I can do. I have sent Twitter messages and what not though to Sam and CTS (the two who do the blogs for this). Hopefully that'll remind them!

  25. ok... I've waited several more days... now I am getting pissed off...

I'm going on vacation tomorrow or the day after the somewhere in the middle of nowhere (tjechiƫ) and if I'm back in like 2 weeks, and there's no post... well I don't know I'll start writing my own and post them in this place...

    ReplyDelete
  26. I completely agree. This has gotten ridiculous!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. lol I just re-read my post and it didn't make much sense to me :P

I said that when I return from my vacation in 2 weeks, I will write my own blog and post them here....

but I don't think that impresses them much, they're probably on vacation totally forgetting about lost and all the people that actually read this (and I'm pretty sure alot of people read them...)

  28. Seems that this and many other bloggers aren't really into the rewatch. I guess it seemed like a good idea at the time. Bummer.

  29. Jopinionated has the the next week up now if anyone would rather read it there

  30. Guess Lostpedia is no longer doing the Rewatch. Out of courtesy, there should have been an announcement. Thanks to Nickb123 for at least providing some content for us! Go Nick!

  31. Walt may have been wet, as Desmond was in future seasons as it helped his time/space travel.

  32. This whole Lost rewatch is a joke. Why don't you just cancel it now since no one appears to be keeping up. I was hoping to have a variety of posts/perspectives from each episode. Instead, we aren't even through season 2 yet and pretty much everyone has run out of gas...
