1x13 "Hearts and Minds"
- Locke makes Boone some "wacky paste" which makes him hallucinate. Locke has imbibed similar wacky paste himself, while in the sweat lodge in "Further Instructions." During his hallucination, he also saw Boone.
Michael is once again looking for "his boy." This is just another entry in the ever-continuing pattern of Michael losing his son.
- Locke mentions "the mind's eye." That seems very prevalent to the recurring theme of eyes on the show. Walt's visualization of stabbing the tree with his knife actually works. As someone commented on one of my previous rewatch blogs, perhaps Walt's imagination affects the reality around him.
- Michael tells Walt that they are "taking control of their destiny." Destiny also becomes a recurring motif in Lost, especially when you look at the tagline for Ajira Airways (and also the tagline for season five as a whole): "Destiny calls."
- Locke and Boone find Claire coming out of the jungle at night, similarly to how Michael will later be found after he returns from being with the Others at the end of season two.
After Claire's return, Jack says that he doesn't know if Claire's memory of her time with Ethan will ever return. It will, however, in the season two episode "Maternity Leave," which will air exactly one season away from this episode.
- About the guns, Jack says "I hand them out, someone hears something out in the jungle and gets scared, the chances of us shooting each other are much higher than of us shooting him." This will prove to be true with Ana Lucia, who will shoot Shannon in the jungle when mistaking her for an Other.
- Charlie shoots and kills Ethan, ending quite a full life, especially since he was the only baby we've seen to be delivered on the Island (besides Aaron). Check out the Ethan article to read up on all that Ethan's done on (and off) the Island.
We witness the murder of Mary Ford and Mr. Ford's suicide, which were both caused by the father of John Locke, Anthony Cooper (who at the time was using the alias Tom Sawyer). Their collective funeral will later be attended by Jacob.
- It's interesting to note that the child who played Sawyer in this episode, Gordon Hardie, did not portray Sawyer in the flashback from "The Incident," presumably because Hardie had aged considerably. Instead, the young Sawyer at the funeral was portrayed by Keegan Boos.
- Sawyer romances Mary Jo, who we'll later see call out the winning lottery numbers for Hurley. Mary Jo is played by Brittany Perrineau, wife of Harold Perrineau, who plays Michael.
- Kate drinks when Sawyer says that he's never been married, referencing her marriage to policeman Kevin Callis, which ended abruptly when she left him to continue running.
Great post...great to combine the less noteworthy episodes. one thing the Rewatch is making me realize is that I'm glad they killed Micheal off!
ReplyDeleteYou need to make a correction for the "Special" episode. You said Michael finds claire in the jungle at night at the end of the episode. That isn't true its really Locke and boone who find her when they are looking for vincent.
ReplyDeleteWow, four episodes in one post. I think you shortchanged some of these episodes and missed some important things. (I'm rewatching all the episodes, too.)
ReplyDeleteIn "Special," Walt makes a comment about how his class is studying Australian birds in school. He says they should be studying birds of Egypt. I'm sure the writers knew we were going there - and I think we'll really see where that goes in the final season. The Egyptian god Horus is depicted as a bird, which we'll see in the hieroglyphs and in Hurley's painting at Santa Rosa. (While I'm thinking of it, I'm wondering if the recurring picture of the eye is a reference to the eye of Horus.)
Also, we hear the whispers in "Outlaws." Sawyer hears "it'll come back around" being whispered. In the show, the boar comes back. But in the larger context of the whole series, this could be a reference to a time loop. Some people have opined that the whispers are the voices of all of the others (not to be confused with THE others) who lived during that time, which is continually looping. Also in "Outlaws," Locke tells a story of a dog possibly being the reincarnation of his sister. It's a short story, but I wonder if there are further implications. Will there be recincarnation in the show? (We haven't really seen reincarnation as much as we've seen the smoke monster/Anti-Jacob appearing as those who are already dead. Could it be possible that Aaron is the reincarnation of a character that died before his birth? Could the same be true of Jin and Sun's baby, or Desmond and Penny's?
I know some of that stuff is a bit "out there," but I'm looking hard for clues as I rewatch these episodes.
Finally, I agree that Michael was generally an annoying character. So was Shannon. I don't miss them at all.
Wow, really breezing through these. Weren't expecting it to be so much work were ya?
ReplyDeleteThese episodes deserve a better shake than this!
I also felt these episodes deserved more! One of the other rewatch blogs did a great analysis of hearts and minds
ReplyDeleteI agree. Check out JOpinionated to see what another person can do with the exact same material.
ReplyDeleteObviously I do agree that these episodes are more mainly about introducing characters rather than showing some little secrets, but I do agree you have missed a few points out. What Brian said above.
ReplyDeleteIn the episode "Special" Claire mentions that she dreams of the Black Rock. I really think that this group winds up on the original Black Rock at some point in season 6. I think Claire is dreaming about the Black Rock for a reason. Also, when Jacob and his nemesis are discussing the ship they talk about how they are always coming and destroying everything and the process just repeats itself. Who is to say the nemesis isn’t referring to the Oceanic 815 survivors that seem to keep cropping up throughout various times on the island? Plus, how else would they explain the whole Black Rock stuck in the middle of the island story without there being a lot of time devoted to that period of time? Mind you, they could have Richard, Jacob, or Nemesis flash backs. Also, I just re-watched the episode “Par Avion” from season 3. In it, Mikael says that neither Sayid, Kate, or John were on the “list” made by the man who is “great” and in charge of Ben. He starts to say Kate and Sayid are strangers to him, though he knows their full names. Then he says something very important to Locke: “You I might have a fleeting memory of. But I must be confused because the John Locke I knew was … ” and then he gets interrupted by Danielle.

ReplyDelete"We witness the murder of Mary Ford and James Ford's suicide"
ReplyDeleteSawyer's father's name has never been said in the series. James Ford is Sawyer's name.
Argh, my mistake. Fix'd.
ReplyDeleteYou still didnt fix the michael finding claire part. Scroll up to my earlier comment
ReplyDeleteHello again all,
ReplyDeleteBrian thank you filling more on what hhappened during these episodes. I have to agree that Sam's content was a little light this week. I think you might be on to something with Horace.
Hold here.
I think from this point I going to copy and paste some small sections from wikipedia, about horus.
1.Horus was told by his mother, Isis, to protect the people of Egypt from Set, the god of the desert, storms and chaos.
This starts me on a path of Jacob being like Horus.
2.Since Horus was said to be the sky, he was considered to also contain the sun and moon. It became said that the sun was his right eye and the moon his left, and that they traversed the sky when he, a falcon, flew across it. Thus he became known as Harmerty - Horus of two eyes.
This sounds exactly like a Locke close up from a few episode ago.
3. Not a directly copy cuause it's a little big. But Horus is taled to have ripped off Set(his nimesis) testicle, rendering him infertile.
From Set's Wiki page
1. Set was the god of the desert, and necessary chaos.
Other references on wiki also say Set's domain to include oasis's also. This could be then adapted as the ocean being a vast expanse of unliviable area(or desert) and our island being his oasis.
2. In art, Set was mostly depicted as a mysterious and unknown creature
Smokie?!?! I dont' subscribe to that theory but I know alot of people do so I'll put it out there.
3. Also not a direct copy. Set is one of the oldest gods of the said era. He was not really villanified until he killed Horus's father and dispersed his body parts so that he could not be ressurected. This then lead to the the war between Set and Horus.
The're my basic analogical devices that could be applied to Lost. I hope this gives you all alot more fat to chew on for this 4 part review.
I do like the idea of the whispers being the voices of ppl caught in some time paradox/echos of the past.
Kroller could you please expand on your black rock ideas. I don't follow how the black rock gets to the center on the island in your mind (or in any idea that I ever had for that fact). I also dont remember Clair's dream of the black rock at all, if you could expand on it it would be appreciated.
Now I've always had the guy instinct of Ben becoming the next Jacob. It would be a nice literary redemption story. Espically since the scorned child syndrome really starts to show at the end of season 5. But with tis reincarnatoin theme going on I could lean toward Jacob being reincarnated as Aaron. I back this up with the dissapearance of Jacob from the island for a long time when NONE of the other have seen him. This theory is only in conflict at the end of season 5 when everyone returns to the island and we actually get to see Jacob. But on the other, other hand this whole time travel business causes openings for this theory to work anyways.
Kroller are you sure Michael wasn't refering to something Locke was doing, in your final quote? I vaguely remember the line but my bad memory leaves me with the feeling the michael was commenting on something that was uncharastic for Locke to do.
Brian, Kroller, Thank you for getting my creative juices flowing and giving me usable content to research this week. Sam....::shakes head::...I still love ya anyways :).
Hope my post help give ya all something to chew on till Sam gives us our next much anticipated installment of LOSTPEDIA'S, LOST REWATCH. Witch is never posted on Wednesdays 9p/10p Central.
Ace Willco
P.S. Does anyone have a count of the number of different animals on the island? (I'm still playing with the numbers alot)
Dudes... Sam can't win here! First you say it's too much, now too little! Why don't you go do your own ReWatch instead if you don't like it. I thinl Sam pretty much got all the important stuff from the last four eps - they're pretty bland (I mean, come on, this is Boone, Michael and Claire - most irritating characters in Lost history, excluding Kate).
ReplyDeleteAnd by the way, Ace, you're a toolbag. How about posting a constructive, topic-related comment next time?
Keep up the effort, Sam.
Shannon: a character so nice, they had to kill her twice.
ReplyDeleteWhen Boone was having his vision, was the monster really there? I was a little disappointed when Shannon was found safe and sound with Sayid.
When I first saw Ethan fighting Jack in episode 11, I thought Ethan and the Others were some type of superhumans. Ethan had the strength to carry off Claire and Charlie, how the heck did he do that? When Jack and Ethan went for round 2 in "Homecoming", I was glad to see that Ethan was a mere mortal. I was a bit upset when Charlie killed Ethan. Knowing now what we do about the Others, we know for sure Ethan wouldn't have gave them any information anyway.
One thing could be mentioned about the episode "Hearts and Minds" where Charlie says "If there's one man I would put my faith in to save us all, it would be John Locke."
ReplyDeleteDoes this have any link to the answer "He who will save us all" in the episode "The Incident"? After all, John Locke is currently lying in the "shadow of the statue."
Anonymous - That comment from Charlie stuck out to me as well.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't really mindblowing, but I also noticed in one of these episodes (I think it was "Special"), that as Walt was thumbing through one of the comic books, each page was representative of one of the Dharma stations. There was a polar bear, followed by an image of a "station" out at sea (the Looking Glass), followed by an image of a man in some type of medical facility.
I hope you don't do this for the next few episodes because in my opinion they are very important to the show
ReplyDeleteGood comment about Charlie's line: "If there's one man I would put my faith in to save us all, it would be John Locke."
ReplyDeleteAs I watch these episodes straight through for the third time in less than two years, I'm struck by how Jack and Locke are set up as saviors. Jack, through medicine, and Locke through his strange connection the island. (Interesting that he doesn't need a watch or compass, and how he could predict the rain.) We see Jack fail to save Boone later (and he failed to save the federal marshall earlier), and yet Locke seems to have his flaws, too. In the end of the whole series, perhaps one of these men will be the savior, or perhaps they are prefigurations of other conflicts between powerful rivals - Ben and Widmore, Jacob and his nemesis.
Ace, thanks for the Egyptian stuff. I think you are on to something, too.
I think that Sam did well here. This first season kinda wanders around to me. We get the characters and such in place. Perhaps we are using a bit of hindsight here. I doubt the producers or writers had any idea the show would take off like it has.
ReplyDeleteLocke is just the man of amazement and mystery this first season. Makes me wonder if MIB revived him this time instead of Jacob. He might have been dying when Jacob reached him after falling 8 stories. Could he have been dying after the crash and MIB got to him first this time? He has been such a tool for them hasn't he? They seem to jerk him back and forth between them.
I always disliked Michael's character and the actor did a great job making him such a jerk. Shannon's death didn't faze me a bit. She always sucked up to whatever man she could use. Sayid was the better pick after the crash and he fell hard for her. Shannon seems to be a fore runner of Juliet doesn't she? Latch on to someone to use is her style. I never liked Juliet either.
In the beginning of "Homecoming," Jin asked Sun if she thought Claire's baby was okay. Sun gave him a long, hurt look before answering. This meant a lot more now, knowing about their fertility struggles.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea how to contact the administrators, but you're one, right? I just saw on MSN that Lost has ordered another hour next season.
ReplyDeletedon't delete my comments. that's called censorship.
ReplyDeletethis blog is a joke. it offers absolutely nothing for anyone. no insight, no nothing. we all saw the freaking episodes. we dont need a little summary of what happened.
ouch.
It must be tough to write these rewatch posts. Obviously, you don't just want to recap the episode. That's been done a million times.
ReplyDeleteThe reasons to rewatch are two-fold:
1) To look for revelations that make more sense now given what we have seen.
2) To look for clues to where the show is heading in its final season.
I think so far, this blog has done a good job at #1. You are making connections that others may miss.
However, I think more attention could be focused on clues for the next season. To do this though you have to speculate a bit. Maybe that's not the intention of this blog.
I have tried to rewatch these episodes looking for clues about A) Time travel and time loops, B) Good Locke/Evil Locke possibilities, and C) the larger game (black/white, good/evil, Ben/Widmore, Jacob/Other guy, etc.)
From this speculative rewatch angle, I think these episodes reveal more than we realize and certainly more than most of the rewatch blogs are getting into.
Hope this criticism is constructive. I look forward to the next post!
@Anonymous While I understand your disappointment with this blog, I would say that the blog is not worthless, and certainly does not extensively recap the episodes (well, any more) as you claim. Please keep your criticism constructive.

I would place special emphasis on the word "lies". What lies in the shadow of the statue? He who will save us all. The writers have been known to use clever wordplay such as this.
Putting it into the context of deception, plus Charlie's earlier comment about Locke, I'd say there may be something there.
What if the "question" that Ilana and Bram ask their "candidates" is not meant to be literal, but perhaps even a stab at (non-)Locke and his manipulative ways?
I think there may be a link between Susan and the Black Rock. Michael reminds her early in the episode that she once mentioned living on a boat. Then there's the mention of the Black Rock in Claire's diary. Also, in "Adrift," we'll see a model ship in Susan's law office that looks very much like the Black Rock.
ReplyDeleteI think there's more to be mined in Susan's blood disease and Walt's lineage.
idledandy, I hope for amusement's sake you're going for the old "black guys must have been slaves on the Black Rock" angle. Always good fun to see such moronic comments.

"...in a wheelchair", is how the sentence would have ended. This has nothing to do with Fake Locke.
Hi, I'm just joining in the great rewatch and I'm almost up to date. I thought I'd share a nice little TV reference made during the Charlie flahbacks in the homecoming. The woman he's dating (I forget her name) mentions that someone went to work for a 'paper company in Slough'. This is a direct reference to the British version of the comedy show The Office which is set in a paper company in Slough.
ReplyDeleteI'm just now catching up on these recaps -- good stuff -- so pardon the late post (or if that has been mentioned)
ReplyDelete-- in Hearts & Minds, there is a scene between Locke and Jack that has an eerie similarity to the scene with Jacob and his enemy, and someone actually posted this scene on youtube and added "jacob's theme music". very cool stuff!! check out the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqruY6tlay4
Thanks, Sam. I think you're doing a great job.
ReplyDeleteI just rewatched The Constant and feel so stupid for not seeing this the first time, or remembering it anyway, but when Desmund goes to find Mr. Whidmore to ask for Penny's number, they're having an auction for the Captain's First Mate's journal- the only remaining artifact from when the Black Rock disappeared in the ocean. Ha, kind of cool.
As I'm currently blogging about the rewatch too, I can attest to the fact that it's not as easy as it looks. You can't get up close and intimate with every single episode, so choices have to be made. I agree that these particular episodes aren't as chock-full of new insights on a rewatch as some others in Season 1.
ReplyDeleteBrian, I love your ideas about the bird in "Special." I didn't notice Walt's comment about Egypt before, very cool.
I completely agree with most here. I just watched these 4 episodes last night and was blown away by them and all of the crazy connections that I saw. I was actually excited to read the blog today to see what you had to say and if others saw what I saw then I read.. [Because this week's episodes were so lacking in usable content, I felt it was only right to just use one blog for all four episodes, to be economical with both time and space.]
ReplyDeleteWhat a bummer.. Think Im gonna go somewhere else. Thanks for nothing!
On my leave, heres somehting to chew on: Does anyone have an inclanation as to why animals can reproduce on the island and poeple cant? (Sawyer with the piglet)..Or hey how about every time God is mentioned Locke shows up? Or the crazy halucination boone had about shannon.. did you catch some craZy stuff in there? I did :)
peace.
I'm wondering about the pen that Locke tries to give Michael. Why would he do this? Why would Michael need a pen? It just reminds me of Jacob giving Sawyer a pen to write his letter to "Mr Sawyer".
ReplyDeleteFirstly, thank you to Sam for doing this rewatch blog! Secondly, even though I found more things to contemplate about in these episodes than were written about, I have missed many other things so who am I to say anything. Thirdly, negative Anonymous, if you don't like how this rewatch is being done, go elsewhere and keep nasty comments to yourself.
ReplyDeleteJust rewatched "Special" and realised: Michael burns Walt's Comic book, who pays him back later by burning the first raft.
ReplyDelete
